Google Reviews: The Cheapest Marketing You're Not Using

Here's a fact that surprises most contractors: a business with 150 Google reviews will outrank a business with 15 reviews, even if the 15-review business has a better website, better SEO, and better service. Reviews are the single biggest local ranking factor you can control. And almost no contractor has a system for getting them.

What most contractors do (and why it doesn't work)

Most contractors do one of two things:

  • Nothing. They hope happy customers will leave reviews on their own. They won't. Maybe one in fifty does.
  • A sign in the office. "Please leave us a Google review!" stuck on the wall or printed on the receipt. Nobody reads it, and even if they do, they forget by the time they get home.

Neither of these works. What works is a system — a repeatable, automated process that asks every satisfied customer for a review at the exact moment they're happiest: right after the job is done.

The system we set up

For our Growth clients, here's what we do:

  1. Generate a short review link. We create a direct link to their Google review form — not the homepage, the actual review page. One click, no searching, no navigating.
  2. Send it via text after every job. The contractor texts the link to the customer the day the job is completed, while the experience is fresh. "Thanks for choosing us, John! If you were happy with our work, would you take 30 seconds to leave a review? [link]"
  3. Track the results. We monitor how many reviews come in each month and flag when the velocity drops.
  4. Respond to every review. We draft responses for the contractor to approve — thanking the customer by name and mentioning their trade and city (which reinforces local SEO keywords).

The target is 3–5 new reviews per month. That's not a lot. But it's consistent, which is what Google rewards. A business that gets 5 reviews every month will outrank a business that got 50 reviews two years ago and nothing since.

Why reviews matter more than your website

Google's local algorithm weighs three things: relevance, distance, and prominence. Reviews are the biggest piece of "prominence" you can control.

Here's the breakdown from BrightLocal's 2025 study:

  • Google Business Profile signals: 32% of local ranking weight
  • Review signals: 16%
  • On-page signals: 19%
  • Link signals: 11%

Reviews alone are 16% of what gets you into the Map Pack. Combined with your Google Business Profile (32%), that's nearly half the ranking formula — and it's the half that most contractors completely ignore.

The velocity trap

Here's the thing most people get wrong: it's not about the total number of reviews. It's about velocity — how many you're getting right now.

We've seen contractors with 200 reviews that are all from 2023. Their ranking has been dropping for months because Google sees a business that used to be busy but isn't anymore. Meanwhile, a competitor with 60 reviews — but 5 new ones every month — is climbing past them.

The fix isn't "get more reviews." It's "get reviews regularly." Three a month, every month, beats thirty in January and nothing for the rest of the year.

What about bad reviews?

Every contractor worries about this. Here's the truth: a 4.8-star rating with 150 reviews is more trustworthy than a 5.0 with 8. Perfection looks fake. A single 3-star with a thoughtful response from the owner looks more real than a wall of 5-stars.

What matters is responding. We draft responses to every review — good and bad — within 24 hours. Google indexes review responses, and they contribute to your keyword relevance. A response that says "Thanks for choosing Smith Plumbing for your water heater installation in Denver" is a free SEO signal.

The cost

The review generation system is part of our $99/month Growth plan. It costs us nothing extra to run — the tools are free (Google Business Profile is free, texting is through your existing phone). What you're paying for is the system — the link, the text message, the tracking, the response drafting, the monthly review of what's working and what isn't.

If you're not ready for the Growth plan, start by just claiming your Google Business Profile and asking every customer for a review. But if you want it done for you — consistently, every month, without thinking about it — book a call and we'll set it up this week.
